Conference “Advancing REACH beyond 2020”

We regret to inform you that the "Advancing REACH beyond 2020" conference planned for 9 June 2020 will be cancelled due to the uncertainties regarding the current corona pandemic.

The main aim of this conference was to present the results of a larger research project to a broader audience of stakeholders and to discuss ideas and perspectives on proposals on selected aspects on a political level.

We very much regret this cancellation. But the results of the research project will be published and communicated after the project has concluded. We hope that there will be other appropriate opportunities to exchange and discuss the proposals for a further development of REACH.

Date & time:  9th of June 2020, 10:00 to 17:00 CET

Where:  Representation of the European Commission in Berlin

What can you expect – some background

The aim of this conference is to discuss options to further develop REACH. The conference addresses national and EU stakeholders from authorities, industries and NGOs. The focus of this conference is more on a political level - elaborating the general options and feasibility - than a detailed scientific level.

The last REACH review initiated discussions and activities to improve the implementation of REACH. For example, discussions on improving the quality of registration dossiers, simplifying the authorisation process, avoiding competitive disadvantages of EU companies via improved use of restrictions and effective enforcement and clarifying the interplay between REACH and other legislation, in particular on workers’ health and waste, came up to name a few.

In this context, the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the German Environment Agency (UBA) launched a research project to identify options to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the REACH implementation, which will be finalized in 2020. Selected results of the research project shall be presented to a wider audience and discussed in a broader perspective at this conference.

The main topics of the project will be (among others):

  • Increasing compliance of registration dossiers
  • Smart inclusion of (specific) polymers in the registration requirements under REACH
  • Improving the availability of use and exposure information
  • Introducing authorisation obligations of SVHC in articles under REACH

Agenda

A detailed agenda will be published by the end of February 2020.
