This paper examines the potential synergies between German nitrogen and green-house gas (GHG) mitigation policies in the agricultural sector. Agricultural practices aimed at reducing air (ammonia) and water (nitrates) pollution can have beneficial effects on GHG mitigation (nitrous oxide and methane) taking into consideration the nitrogen cycle and biogeochemical pathways.

In diesem Forschungsvorhaben werden Kultursubstrate als neue Produktgruppe für den Blauen Engel untersucht und Kriterien für das Umweltzeichen entwickelt. Die Produktgruppe beschränkt sich auf organische Kultursubstrate, d.h. solche, die einen gewissen Anteil organischer Substanz enthalten und einen erdigen Charakter aufweisen.

Das Konzept der Schwammstadt bietet großes Potenzial für den klimagerechten Umbau von Städten. Niederschlagswasser wird lokal aufgefangen und nutzbar gemacht, um Städte besser gegen Klimarisiken zu wappnen und die Lebensquaität zu erhöhen. Dennoch stehen der Transformation zur Schwammstadt noch beträchtliche bauliche, rechtliche und organisatorsiche Hemmnisse im Wege.

Dieses Hintergrundpapier stellt eine generelle Einführung zum klimawissenschaftlichen Konzept der CO₂-Budgets und den notwendigen methodischen und politisch-gesellschaftlichen Annahmen und Entscheidungen zur Berechnung von CO₂-Budgets dar.

According to a UBA study, water bodies can be sources of greenhouse gases and thus contribute to climate change. In our surface waters carbon and nitrogen can be transformed into carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. The type of gas that is produced, results from various biological and chemical decomposition processes of organic material.

This publication explores the scientific dimensions of blue carbon (BC) for global climate mitigation. BC is defined and criteria for identifying BC measures are outlined based on a comprehensive analysis of current scientific literature.
