UN Climate Conference COP30: No breakthrough, but small successes

Entrance to the grounds of the 30th World Climate Conference

The results of COP30 are disappointing and reflect the complex geopolitical situation that prevented substantial progress. The proposed roadmap for a global phase-out of coal, oil and gas failed due to a strong opposition. Despite immense differences, many smaller decisions and successes were achieved.

COP30 World Climate Conference: Together for the climate

Logo: COP30 Brasil

Starting on November 10th — 10 years after the Paris Agreement—the international community will once again negotiate the future of global climate action. This time, the talks will take place on the banks of the Amazon in Belém, Brazil, a symbolic location. The focus will be on new national climate action contributions and the measurability of adaptation progress.

Improving the disposal of medicines

Pharmaceuticals and the environment

Pollution of the environment by pharmaceuticals is a growing problem. Environmentally sound disposal helps to reduce their unnecessary entry into the environment. To address this issue the German Environment Agency has set up the portal ‘Pharmaceuticals and the environment.’ It provides information and recommendations for pharmaceutical and medical professionals as well as for consumers.

German Environmental Survey celebrates 40th anniversary

a colorful picture with many different faces

In 1985, the first German Environmental Survey on Health (GerES) was launched. Since then, this series of surveys has been investigating the exposure of the German population to pollutants. The data are used to inform the public. It also provides an important scientific basis for policy decisions on environment, health, and chemicals. Here’s a timeline of the survey's major milestones.

EU project PARC: Knowledge Hub on Safe and Sustainable by Design

Eine Hand hält ein Reagenzglas, in dem sich sinnbildlich ein Abbild der Erde befindet.

A new portal on the strategic approach “Safe and Sustainable by Design” (SSbD) is online as part of the EU partnership PARC. It was created by a group of PARC partners jointly led by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment and the German Environment Agency (UBA) and bundles information, tools and teaching materials as well as invites to exchange knowledge.

Risks and benefits of inhibitors in agriculture

Acker neben Wiese mit Bäumen im Hintergrund

Urease and nitrification inhibitors are chemicals used in agriculture to increase plant nitrogen utilization of fertilizers and thereby reduce ammonia, nitrate and nitrous oxide emissions. But their application comes with environmental and health risks. The German Environment Agency (UBA) therefore recommends improved regulation of these substances.

More cooperation required to tackle PFAS pollution in soil

Wildschein im Wald

The conference “PFAS in soil – forever pollution, forever concern?” focused on soil pollution caused by PFAS. Some 150 participants from science, public institutions, industry and environmental organisations attended the conference and 200 more joined via live stream to discuss the risks, in particular for human health. More international cooperation is needed to tackle this problem effectively.

Transport

Freight transport: climate-neutral, electrified, reimagined

The various proposed measures for environmentally friendly freight transport described in the brochure have been summarized in a vision picture.

Without freight transport shop shelves would be empty, and the economy would grind to a halt. But transporting goods and waste generates noise, air pollutants and greenhouse gases. To counter this the UBA in its vision for 2045 recommends to shift transports to trains and inland shipping while electrifying lorries and ships and avoiding goods transport altogether whenever possible.

CASRI Project Tackles Environmental and Sustainability Challenges

A group picture of the members of CASRI

In April 2024, the EU-funded CASRI project (Collaborative Action for Systemic, Actionable, and Transversal Sustainability Research and Innovation) was officially launched at the German Environment Agency (UBA) in Dessau.

Guideline for greenhouse gas calculation in the transport sector

Lieferwagen in der Stadt

The transport of passengers and freight generates greenhouse gases (GHG) – not only through the actual transport activities, but also as a result of the processes at the individual locations or through services. On behalf of the UBA, a guideline has been produced which provides information for the standardised calculation and reporting of GHG emissions along transport chains.

UBA & IIASA cooperate on modelling climate action scenarios

12 participants of the workshop stand together with IIASA Director General John Schellnhuber in a baroque furnished room at IIASA.

As part of an in-house research project, UBA is working on the use and further development of an integrated assessment model (IAM) developed by the independent research institute IIASA. IAMs combine economic, social and ecological aspects for the development of climate action scenarios and are central to the IPCC process. The cooperation between UBA and IIASA is now official.
