UBA website redesigned to be more modern and user-friendly
The German Environment Agency’s (UBA) website has undergone a major technical upgrade. We have taken this opportunity to redesign the homepage and implement a range of further improvements. Below you will find an overview of what’s new and how you can share your feedback with us.
What’s new
The website now runs on the newer version of our content management system (Drupal 10). But what does this mean for you as a user?
Key content at a glance The redesigned homepage now follows a single-column layout. As you scroll, you can quickly gain an overview of the most important content on the site – including the latest news, social media posts, events, videos and publications, as well as key sections such as our thematic pages and information for specific target groups.
Explore content faster with the mega menu Our new drop-down menu allows you to navigate directly to content on the second and third levels of the site, for example to our topic articles under the main menu item “Topics”.
New times, new topics Ahead of the relaunch, we also introduced a new thematic page on digitalisation. Over recent years, research output in this area has grown significantly – for example on the energy-efficient operation of data centres or the impact of software on the lifespan of devices.
Greater data protection through our own video platform All videos on the new website are now embedded via our own video platform, meaning they no longer rely on external providers. This ensures compliance with data protection requirements and keeps the content free from advertising. The UBA YouTube channel will continue to exist as a separate communication platform.
Improved accessibility thanks to up-to-date HTML code The website is now technically up to date, meaning issues such as navigation problems when using screen readers should no longer occur. From now on, foreign-language words and passages (for example an English quotation within a German text) can also be marked correctly so that screen readers pronounce them accurately. The UBA has had the new website independently tested for accessibility, and any identified issues are being addressed step by step.
More professional newsletter delivery with a specialist provider With immediate effect, the UBA now sends its newsletters via the service provider Brevo. This ensures improved display across all major email clients and faster delivery, which is particularly important for press releases. Data protection remains fully guaranteed.
We’d love your feedback
The UBA website offers a wide range of information and features, which made this technical relaunch a highly complex project. We therefore ask for your understanding if not everything is perfect just yet. We would be grateful if you could use our (anonymous) feedback form to let us know where you feel further improvements are needed. We will follow up on your suggestions as quickly as possible.
Background information on the UBA website
Since the establishment of the German Environment Agency (UBA) in 1974, informing the public about environmental issues has been a core statutory task. The UBA website has been online since 1997. It is aimed at a broad audience with diverse target groups and provides not only specialist information – such as scientific final reports, thematic articles and data – but also practical environmental tips for consumers (in German), for example on saving energy at home or shopping online more sustainably. The website is powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity and runs on the open-source content management system Drupal, which is continuously developed by a global community.
