European Earth Observation Programme Copernicus

Sentinel-2 RGB satellite image of Dessau-Roßlau (date of recording: June 21, 2020), overlaid with the data product “Riparian Zones” (reference year 2012), provided by the Copernicus Land Service.

The European Earth observation programme Copernicus provides key information for environmental and nature conservation monitoring, atmospheric and climate monitoring and crisis management in the event of natural disasters. The UBA contributes to the national coordination and supports the further development and use of Copernicus.

Monitoring and assessment

The federal and state governments regularly collect data on the North Sea and Baltic Sea using various monitoring methods. This helps to assess the marine environment and counteract negative trends. In addition to traditional sampling with ships and aircraft, innovative methods such as satellite imagery and modelling are increasingly being used for monitoring.

Satellite-based penguin monitoring

The retreat of the Antarctic sea ice is also a threat to chinstrap penguins

Climate changes along the Antarctic Peninsula are affecting penguin populations across vast areas. The phenomenon can only be tracked on a large-scale with the help of remote sensing. The Federal Environment Agency is campaigning for a system of international penguin monitoring and has already gained some promising experience with possible monitoring methods.

Environmental monitoring on King George Island

The Fildes Region is subject to high pressure of use. Environmental monitoring helps to show its effects.

King George Island is the largest of the South Shetland Islands, and because of its accessibility from South America, now hosts 14 research stations and field huts of about one dozen nations. Construction and operation of these stations requires a great deal of logistical activities which impact the environment. Environmental monitoring will help to detect and solve problems.
