UBA welcomes Ukrainian research fellowship holder

Das Bild zeigt die ukrainische Forschungsstipendiatin Dr. Olena Matukhno.

Dr Olena Matukhno began her research work at the German Environment Agency (UBA) on 1 February 2024. Her work focuses on compliance with national climate targets in the Ukrainian iron and steel industry through decarbonisation and emissions trading measures once the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has ended.

Permitting research projects on marine geoengineering

The German Environment Agency (UBA) is the enforcement authority for scientific projects in marine geoengineering. Marine geoengineering refers to targeted interventions in the seas to mitigate climate change, such as through methods for CO₂ removal. The legal basis for this is the German “Hohe-See-Einbringungsgesetz” (Article 8 para. 3 HSEG).

Environmental monitoring on King George Island

The Fildes Region is subject to high pressure of use. Environmental monitoring helps to show its effects.

King George Island is the largest of the South Shetland Islands, and because of its accessibility from South America, now hosts 14 research stations and field huts of about one dozen nations. Construction and operation of these stations requires a great deal of logistical activities which impact the environment. Environmental monitoring will help to detect and solve problems.

The German Environment Agency and the Antarctic

Protecting the Antarctic is one of the tasks of the Federal Environment Agency.

It is difficult at first glance to see the connection between a German environment agency and the Antarctic - after all, Germany has no territorial claims in the eternal ice. However, Germany is a Party to the Antarctic Treaty and thus assumes responsibility for the Antarctic. The German Environment Agency (UBA) helps to meet these responsibilities.
