Current note:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to postpone the Workshop ‘Managing HFC Phase-down with Natural Refrigerants’ planned for 9 to 10 June 2020 in Berlin, Germany, to the year 2021. We will announce the exact date as soon as it is set.
Please stay safe, healthy and cool!
Your GIZ & UBA Organisation Team
According to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) will decrease drastically over the next three decades in both, developed and developing countries. Whereas HFC Phase-down already started in developed countries, the two groups of developing countries will start with the freeze of HFC use in 2022 and 2026, respectively, and the actual Phase down in 2024 and 2028. In order to comply with the Kigali Amendment, HFCs, which are predominantly used as refrigerants in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, need to be replaced by substances which have a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) in addition to the absence of an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). Both qualities apply to natural refrigerants such as ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons, which, in combination with their good energy performance, makes them viable and future-proof candidates to replace HFC refrigerants.
The aim of the two-day event is to discuss concepts and lessons learned regarding policies and legislative approaches to introduce natural refrigerant technologies in different countries and to explore the deployment of such technologies in the fields of food cooling and air conditioning.
