13th German Ecodesign Award honours ten outstanding ideas for the future
The advisory board and jury of the German Ecodesign Award have selected ten winners from a record number of more than 400 submissions.
Healthy soils are the basis of life for future generations
The National Soil Monitoring Centre at the German Environment Agency (UBA) in Dessau-Roßlau was opened on 2 December. The aim of the new centre is to make as much of the data as possible collected in Germany on the condition of soils from the various monitoring programmes available from a central location and to make it usable for joint evaluations. The results can also be used at European level.
Consumer protection: UBA takes action against Chinese low-cost online marketplace Temu
the CPC network of European consumer protection authorities, co-led by the German Environment Agency (UBA), is taking action against the company. In a joint letter, the consumer protection authorities call on Temu to cease its violations of European law as soon as possible. If the company does not cooperate, further measures – such as the imposition of fines – may follow.
Rural areas and urban centres are interdependent
The “Urban-Rural-Plus” project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) examined how urban and rural areas can work together more effectively to combine the advantages of both and compensate for deficits, for example in the areas of nutrition, housing, trade, recycling management and local recreation.

On the way to a pollutant-free environment
From 10 to 11 September 2024, the 6th REACH Congress took place at the German Environment Agency (UBA) in Dessau-Rosslau with more than 500 experts from companies, scientists, non-governmental organisations and public authorities. UBA refuses to approve certificates for eight UER projects
The intensive and complex educational work of the German Environment Agency (UBA) in the area of Upstream Emission Reductions (UER) is showing further success: For eight UER projects in China, for which a decision on approval had to be made by 31 August 2024, the UBA will not issue the requested approvals due to irregularities identified by the UBA.

Online platform DIVID of the Single-Use Plastics Fund now also enables registration of claimants and foreign manufacturers
The Single-Use Plastic Fund Act obliges manufacturers, from 2024, to bear the costs of single-use plastic products collected as waste in streets or parks. While the digital platform DIVID, set up by the UBA, was initially only available for the registration of manufacturers in Germany, eligible parties and foreign manufacturers have also been able to register there since 1 August 2024.
