The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has begun an advisory assistance project managed by UBA, entitled “Environmental monitoring using satellite remote sensing methods based on the example of spring flooding in the Republic of Bashkortostan/Russia”.

The aim of the project is to address the problem of flooding in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan with the help of remote sensing data and methods and to thus support sound decision-making on how to prevent and reduce environmental and economic damage. The project serves as a model in that it shows how monitoring can take place on a large scale using ultramodern technologies which can also be applied to other regional environmental problems, such as assessment of the risk of forest fires, the impacts of illegal mining activities, or the destruction of infrastructure due to changes in river flows.
