Freight transport: climate-neutral, electrified, reimagined

The various proposed measures for environmentally friendly freight transport described in the brochure have been summarized in a vision picture.

Without freight transport shop shelves would be empty, and the economy would grind to a halt. But transporting goods and waste generates noise, air pollutants and greenhouse gases. To counter this the UBA in its vision for 2045 recommends to shift transports to trains and inland shipping while electrifying lorries and ships and avoiding goods transport altogether whenever possible.

Environmental statements on long-distance bus journeys: Federal Court confirms UBA's decision

The court has ruled in favour of UBA in its fight against misleading greenwashing. In its ruling of 20 February 2025, the Federal Court of Justice confirmed the decision of the lower court, the Dessau-Roßlau Regional Court. The court had imposed strict controls on general and comparative advertising. Information on offers for CO₂ offsetting must be meaninful and transparent.

The European Commission wants to combat widespread greenwashing in advertising and promote reliable environmental information with a new directive on competition and consumer laws. The goal is to protect consumers from often misleading adverts boasting the environmental benefits of products with labels such as ‘eco’, ‘sustainable’, ‘climate neutral’ or ‘recyclable’.

On behalf of the UBA, a guideline has been produced which provides information for the standardised calculation and reporting of GHG emissions along transport chains.

Revenue from emissions trading once again at record level

Revenue from European and national emissions trading in Germany totalled around 18.5 billion euros in 2024. This means that proceeds from these two key climate protection instruments was once again slightly higher than in the previous year.
