A study by the German Environment Agency looks into the scope for political and economic steering to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from bogs and forests. The analysis covers measures both at international level (UNFCCC) and EU level.

This is the conclusion of the European Environment Agency in its annual report on the pressures of the transport sector on the environment.

As a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Germany is required to elaborate annual emission inventories, including for fluorinated greenhouse gases.

Tilling, nitrogen fertilizers and livestock farming are key sources of the greenhouse gases nitrous oxide and methane, as the statistics clearly show: in 2016 59 per cent of all methane emissions and 80 per cent of all nitrous oxide emissions resulted from agricultural activities. Hence abatement measures are urgently needed in this domain.
