Environmental justice – Environment, health and social conditions

Where we live is a determining factor for how much we are affected by environmental influences.

People with low incomes and little education are often more exposed to environmental stress than socially advantaged people. Under the heading of “environmental justice”, the UBA works on the subject of the (uneven) distribution of exposure to environm. pressures and environmental resources and its health implications, with the aim of helping to create healthy environmental and living conditions.

Environmental burden of disease

Environmental influences can cause illness: For example, noise increases the risk of heart attack and particulate matter may trigger lung cancer. The Federal Environment Agency uses the "environmental burden of disease” concept to investigate which environmental impacts are associated with particularly large numbers of diseases and what benefits environmental protection can have for our health.

Our bodies are composed of anywhere from 50 to 70 percent water, depending on age. Constant water intake is key to our health, as our bodies lose water throughout the day and night. An adult should normally drink an average of two liters of water daily.

Often it is no easy matter to find out available ecofriendly-products amongst the labyrinth of choices. Ecolabels should provide guidance and orientation. The UBA is committed to promote a wider use of environmentally friendly products and their success on the market.
