Nature-Aligned Western Balkans: strengthening biodiversity governance and dialogue

The integration of Western Balkan countries into the European Union prioritises environmental sustainability through the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB). The Biodiversity Task Force for the Western Balkans (BDTF), coordinated by IUCN, focuses on protecting ecosystems and biodiversity through habitat conservation and sustainable land use. The project aims to transform biodiversity governance in the region by linking technical support with political commitment and aligning national standards with EU requirements. Through collaboration with regional coordination mechanisms, the initiative will strengthen policymaking and institutional capacity. It will also promote ecological connectivity and cross-border biodiversity networks, including expansion of the Emerald Network toward Natura 2000 designation. Training programs, peer exchanges, and technical support will equip national and regional institutions to enhance biodiversity governance and implement relevant EU directives.
