Digitalization creates new opportunities for implementing the 2030 agenda and the UN's sustainability goals - and thus also for environmental and climate protection. Aim of the CODES initiative is to accelerate global action for „A Sustainable Planet in the Digital Age“ under the umbrella of the UN Secretary General‘s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation.
Aim and Objectives of CODES
The aim of the joint initiative CODES is to embrace the opportunities of present and future digital solutions to reach the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and beyond. This requires designing adequate infrastructural and institutional settings of local and global governance for sustainable digital societies, improving our research capacities in this newly emerging field of digital sustainability and sustainable digitalization, and developing capabilities for better and equitable implementation and multi-actor partnerships. It is further necessary to renew the discussion on the ethical transition to a sustainable planet in the Digital Age based on the principles of human rights and – in accordance with the obligation of the Member States of the UN – leaving no one behind.
CODES supports UN Secretary General‘s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation
The Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability (CODES), is a transnational multi-stakeholder alliance created in March 2021 in response to the UN Secretary General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation to steer the use of digital technologies toward accelerating environmentally and socially sustainable development. CODES is striving to reorient and prioritize the application of digital technologies to meet the 2030 sustainable development agenda and to achieve the multiple global environmental goals that have been adopted as the outcomes of multilateral processes and years of consensus building across all UN Member States.
Call for Global Action – CODES Action Plan „A Sustainable Planet in the Digital Age“
As a result of a consultative process over the past 12 months, the newly drafted CODES Action Plan describes 3 shifts and 18 strategic priorities across the shifts that are needed to harness digital transformation as a positive and exponential force for progressing environmentally and socially sustainable development.
The goal of the Action Plan is to offer a vision and set of priorities and targets that have been co-created by the CODES community. This Action Plan is part of the follow-up to the UN Secretary-General’s Digital Cooperation Roadmap and is meant to inform the emerging set of priorities for the Global Digital Compact proposed by the UN Secretary-General’s latest report “Our Common Agenda”, which calls for a new landscape of digital governance to harness data for the global good. It will also contribute to the Stockholm +50 conference and to on-going deliberations in the UN Environment Assembly and in the UN Human Rights Council linked to digital transformation and the recently recognized human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
The emergence of the CODES Action Plan marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) set-up to promote environmental sustainability.
CODES at Stockholm+50 on 02 September 2022
The Action Plan will be launched at a side event on the 2nd of June during the Stockholm+50 Event. The event will provide leaders with an opportunity to draw on 50 years of multilateral environmental action to achieve the bold and urgent action needed to secure a better future on a healthy planet.
