Die Nano-Technologie gilt als Zukunfts- und Schlüsseltechnologie des 21. Jahrhunderts, die in einer Vielzahl von Branchen und Technikfeldern zum Einsatz kommt. Hierbei werden einerseits ganz neue Produkte entwickelt, andererseits bestehende technische Lösungen durch 'Nano-Lösungen' substituiert.

Der 4. UBA-Workshop hat gezeigt, dass sich die 1999 ins Leben gerufene Veranstaltungsreihe „Aktuelle DV-gestützte Anwendungen im Bodenschutz- und Altlastenbereich“ als ein wichtiges Informations- und Diskussionsforum für Fachanwender und Entwickler im Bereich der DV-gestützten Bearbeitung von Bodenschutz- und Altlastenthemen etabliert hat.

Der wachsende Bedarf an Fachdaten mit geographischem Bezug, spielt in fast allen Bereichen des Bauwesens eine wichtige Rolle.

Hormonelle Wirkungen von Umweltchemikalien und Störungen des hormonellen Systems (endokrine Disruption) sind in den letzten 10-15 Jahren in die wissenschaftliche und öffentliche Diskussion gerückt.

Die Regularien zur Anwendung mineralischer Abfälle in Bauwerken sind bisher vor allem in der Mitteilung M 20 der Länder-Arbeitsgemeinschaft Abfall (LAGA), den „Anforderungen an die stoffliche Verwertung von mineralischen Reststoffen/Abfällen – Technische Regeln“, festgehalten.
