Climate change and adaptation in the DACH+ project

Background and Goals

The DACH+ project analyses how regional planning can improve climate change adaption in parts of Germany (D), Austria (A), Switzerland (CH) and (+) Liechtenstein. Especially the exchange of experience between the neighboring counties, using different panning approaches, is enhancing the gained knowledge. Cross-border cooperation in spatial planning in the field of climate change adaption is a challenge, but also a great chance to harmonize regional planning and learn for each other. Four regions has been chosen as pilot cases: Hochrhein-Bodensee (D), Land Vorarlberg (A), Kanton St. Gallen (CH) and Kanton Schaffhausen (CH). Furthermore the project obtains concepts and examples for a successful climate change adaption in the field of regional planning.
The project is realized with the support of the Interreg Program Alpenrhein-Bodensee-Hochrhein.

DACH+: parts of Germany (D), Austria (A), Switzerland (CH) and (+) Liechtenstein;
Hochrhein-Bodensee (D), Land Vorarlberg (A), Kanton St. Gallen (CH) and Kanton Schaffhausen (CH) has been chosen as pilot cases

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

The report will include a summary of existing climate knowledge focusing on the DACH+ region. Furthermore Karlsruhe Institut of Technology (KIT) IMK-TRO and Süddeutsches Klimabüro (hosted by KIT) carry out an analysis across borders for the DACH+ region

Time horizon
  • short term = next year’s / decades
  • medium term = to 2050

Step 2b: Identify and assess risks - Vulnerability, risks and chances

Approach and results

Climate effects and impacts are identified and assessed for the project area based on the regional reports and assessments. In addition spatial analyses were performed to localize sensitive structures.

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Spatial planning strategies and measures are analyzed and discussed for the regions of Hochrhein-Bodensee, Land Vorarlberg, Kanton St.Gallen and Kanton Schaffhausen. Furthermore the project obtains concepts and examples for a successful climate change adaption in the field of regional planning.

Time horizon
  • Presence
  • 2021–2050 (near future)
