Greening the office roof, unsealing the schoolyard, farming crops which are adapted to climate change, flood management measures, etc. This is the fourth time the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) is acknowledging local and regional projects which make a real contribution to coping with the effects of climate change in Germany. The extreme drought and heat of 2018 and 2019 are clear signals that these solutions are needed now more than ever. Projects are desired that show that foresight and forward-looking planning.

Project ideas can be submitted to in three categories:

  • Category 1: Private and public enterprises
  • Category 2: Education and research institutions
  • Category 3: Societies, associations, foundations

Deadline for submissions: 10 February 2020

An expert committee of members from UBA, the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) and co2online will draw up a shortlist of the submissions and nominate fifteen projects. A jury of representatives from government, science and civil society will then select the winners from among the nominated projects in the three prize categories. An audience award is also conferred. The winning projects will be determined by a public online vote at in early April 2020.

All four winning projects of the Blauer Kompass contest will be celebrated at a prize awards ceremony scheduled to be held at the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin on 26 June 2020. Each winner receives a trophy as well as support through national press and public relations campaigns. A short film about every project is shown at the awards ceremony.
