Indicator: Land-take for settlements and transport infrastructure

A graph in the form of a bar chart shows how many hectares of land per day in Germany were newly designated for settlements and transport infrastructure between 1993 and 2018. The chart also shows the four-year average.

Indicator: Environmentally friendly freight transport

A graph shows the shares of rail and inland shipping in freight transport volume between 1999 and 2018. The share of rail transport first increased and then began to stagnate, while the share of inland shipping declined.

The rail share in freight transport fluctuated between 17 % and 20 % over the past years.The share of inland waterways transport fell almost continuously from 13.5 % to 7.0 % since 1999.According to the Federal Government, the rail freight transport share should have been rising to 25 % by 2015, while the share of inland waterways should have reached 14%. Indicator: Environmentally friendly passenger transport

A graph shows the share of pedestrian, utility cycling, railway and passenger transport services in the overall passenger transport volume. Shown here are the years between 2003 and 2017. There has been one change in method in this period.

The share of environmentally friendly passenger transport has remained more or less constant since 2003, reaching 20 % in 2017.To keep the environmental impact of passenger transport low, the share of environmentally friendly transport in total passenger transport should be as high as possible.The Federal Government’s National Cycling Plan 2020 is to support cycling as a means of transport. read more

A graph shows the final energy consumption in freight and passenger transport between 1991 and 2018 and the targets of the Federal Government (2005 = 100) presented as an index.

The Federal Government wants to lower final energy consumption in the freight and passenger sector by 15 to 20 % by 2030 compared to 2005.However, final energy consumption in transport seems to stagnate at a high level with an upward trend in recent years. German government statistics concerning transfrontier shipment of wastes show that such transactions mainly involve neighboring countries, with the lion’s share of waste originating from the relevant border regions. The mean transport distance between the location at which waste originates and its recovery or disposal destination is less than 500 kilometers. read more
