Indicator: Final energy consumption of transport

A graph shows the final energy consumption in freight and passenger transport between 2005 and 2019 and the targets of the Federal Government (2005 = 100) presented as an index.

The Federal Government wants to lower final energy consumption of freight and passenger transport by 15 to 20 % by 2030 compared to 2005.However, final energy consumption in transport seems to stagnate at a high level with an upward trend of freight transport in recent years. A graph in the form of a bar chart shows how many hectares of land per day in Germany were newly designated for settlements and transport infrastructure between 1993 and 2019. The chart also shows the four-year average.

A graph shows the shares of rail and inland shipping in freight transport volume between 1999 and 2019. The share of rail transport first increased and then began to stagnate, while the share of inland shipping declined.

German government statistics concerning transfrontier shipment of wastes show that such transactions mainly involve neighboring countries, with the lion’s share of waste originating from the relevant border regions.
