Indicator: Eutrophication of the North Sea/Baltic Sea by nitrogen

A graph shows the change in concentration of total nitrogen in all the main rivers which enter the North Sea and Baltic Sea in Germany. A distinction is made between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The concentration value is given as the moving average of the flows of the past 5 years in milligrams per litre.

To achieve the objectives for the protection of the marine environment, Germany has committed to comply with maximum concentrations of nitrogen at estuaries. These target concentrations in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are only slightly exceeded on average by all rivers, but some rivers still have very high concentrations. In order to fulfil the objectives, it is necessary that each river achieves th... read more

Indicator: River eutrophication by phosphorus

A graph shows the distribution of total phosphorous quality classes (QC) II-III and below for 1982 to 2017 for measuring sites exceeding the requirement for good status. The share of higher exceedance (QC IV) has dropped markedly, that of lower exceedance (II-III) has risen sharply.

Too high phosphorus concentrations are recorded at almost two thirds of all river measurement stations. This share has declined by around one-fifth since the beginning of the 1980s. Very high levels of pollution are very rare nowadays. The Federal Government's aim is to meet the requirements for good status for phosphorous in all water bodies by 2030 at the latest. This primarily requires a change in... read more

Indicator: Nitrate in groundwater

A graph shows the proportion of groundwater sampling sites where nitrate measurements for the years 2008 to 2017 were above 25 and 50 milligrammes per litre. In the period covered, neither sub-indicator has shown any significant change.

The European Nitrates Directive places Germany under the obligation to prevent exceedances of the threshold of 50 milligrammes per litre.Since 2008, this threshold has been exceeded every year by at least 16.9 % of the measuring points. On June 21, 2018, the European Court of Justice found Germany guilty of violating the EU Nitrates Directive (case C-543/16).Agriculture is the most important source... read more

Indicator: Ecological status of lakes

A graph shows the distribution of the environmental status and potential of the lakes for the years 2010 and 2015. The target for 2027 is also shown (100 percent ‘good’ or ‘very good’). In 2015, 26.4 percent showed at least a good status or good potential.

In 2015 26 % of the lakes in Germany were in at least good ecological status or showed at least a good ecological potential.According to the Water Framework Directive the target was 100 % by 2015. Now there is a deadline extension until 2027.Germany is still far from achieving this target. The timeframe until 2027 must be used to achieve these ambitious goals. read more

Indicator: Ecological status of rivers

A graph shows the distribution of the environmental status and potential of the rivers for the years 2010 and 2015. The target for 2027 is also shown (100 percent ‘good’ or ‘very good’). In 2015, 6.7 percent showed at least a good status or good potential.

In 2015 only around 7 % of German streams and rivers were in at least a good ecological status or had at least a good ecological potential.According to the European Water Framework Directive, by 2015 all rivers should have achieved at least a good ecological status or potential. This target has not been achieved. The time up to 2027 must be used to reach these demanding objectives. The measures take... read more

Indicator: Ecological status of transitional and coastal waters

A graph shows the distribution of the environmental status of the North and Baltic Seas for the years 2010 and 2015. The target for 2027 is also shown (100 percent ‘good’ or ‘very good’).

In 2015 no water body of transitional or coastal waters in the North and Baltic Seas achieved good or very good status.According to the European Water Framework Directive, by 2015 all waters should have achieved at least a good ecological status. This target has not been achieved. The time must now be used to reach the ambitious targets by 2027 at the latest. This will require considerable additiona... read more
