The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and German Environment Agency (UBA) are awarding prizes to this year's winners of the German Federal Ecodesign Award today in Berlin. Winning projects include sustainable silk production, a modularly constructed smartphone, an electric retrofittable bicycle engine, and an initiative to dispense free tap water for people on the move. The Federal Environment Ministry and German Environment Agency have awarded the prize since 2012 to outstanding examples of ecodesign.

Federal Environment Svenja Schulze remarked: "The broad range of the winning projects is proof of the creative solutions to more sustainability in many areas of consumption which combine design and ecology. I hope that all the award winners are rewarded by widespread use of their products and services. By consuming more sustainably we can conserve our natural resources and environment in the long term."

UBA's President Maria Krautzberger said: "I am pleased that there is such great interest in this competition, in particular on the part of designers. Their work is the launching pad of sustainable products and they make an important contribution to environmental protection."

Some 200 guests from government, industry, science and the design industry will be attending the awards ceremony at the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin.

The Federal Environment Ministry and German Environment Agency have awarded the German Federal Ecodesign Award every year since 2012 in collaboration with the International Design Center Berlin. The prize is awarded in the four categories "Product", "Service", "Concept" and "Young Talent" to projects which are convincing in design and environmental consciousness. It targets enterprises of all sizes in all industries as well next-generation designers.
