For a tox-free, circular and climate-friendly construction sector

People on a footpath in a green, multi-storey residential complex with balconies

How can our built environment become healthier, more climate-friendly, and more resource-efficient? Recommendations for all levels of politics and administration — from the EU to local government — were developed in the EU Interreg project NonHazCity3 and are now presented with policy briefs and a short video. The focus: digital transparency of ingredients of building products and circularity.

Campaign for a sustainable rat management (KaRMa)

Don't feed rats

KaRMa serves municipalities to make urban habitats less attractive to rats. The campaign aims to reduce food availability in parks, playgrounds and sewers, so that rats do not even start to settle in the city. As a consequence, less rat poison has to be used to control rats - a huge benefit for the protection of human health and the environment.

Systematically perform climate risk assessments in municipalities

Municipalities are affected differently by climate change due to various factors. The German Environment Agency (UBA) therefore recommends the implementation of municipal climate risk assessments along three essential steps: preparation, implementation and communication of the results. To support this, a handout provides information on the methodological procedure in addition to ISO 14091.

Pilot project on environmental justice in German municipalities

Having a healthy living environment should not be coupled to level of income.

The socially disadvantaged neighbourhoods of many municipalities in Germany suffer from a high number of environment-related health risks. A research project by the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) is testing key elements of a strategic approach to achieving environmental justice in three pilot municipalities.

Research project “Environmental justice in urban areas”

Urban neighbourhoods need areas for sports, play, leisure and recreation

The health burden caused by environmental problems is often especially high in socially disadvantaged urban neighborhoods. A research project carried out by the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) has explored how municipalities can be supported in their efforts towards more environmental justice at local level.
