Indicator: National Welfare Index

A graph shows the national welfare index (NWI) and gross domestic product (2000 = 100) for the years between 1991 and 2017. Since 2000, the NWI fell by 3.6 percent, while GDP rose by 24.3 percent.

Gross domestic product (GDP) measures the economic performance of an economy, but does not reflect social welfare.The national welfare index (NWI) includes overall 20 activities that raise and diminish welfare.The NWI reached its peak in 1999 and declined afterwards until 2005. A graph shows the development of environmental costs energy generation and road transport between 2008 and 2014. They were 138.3 billion euros in 2008 and 130.1 billion in 2014.

Environmental costs of energy generation and road transport decreased by only 6 % between 2008 and 2014.Transport-related environmental costs rose by nearly 6 % between 2008 and 2014.Environmental costs of power and heat have decreased over the past years by 12 % and 13 % respectively. read more
