German Environment Agency enhances its air quality app

Now featuring ozone forecast in addition to up-to-date air quality data – optimised tablet version available

The "Luftqualität" air quality app by the German Environment Agency now also features ozone forecasts. The app can display expected ozone levels for the current and two following days. An automatic alert can be activated to notify the user if high levels of ozone are expected within the next 24 hours. Beside ozone levels, the app provides hourly updates on levels of the health-damaging particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide. The app is both free and ad-free and available for iOS and Android operating systems.

The updated app is also easier to handle. A map of Germany provides information on air quality for the whole country. This makes it possible to see at a glance the air quality index values ("very good" to "very poor") which have just been determined within each federal state. Selecting a station will open a detailed map section showing the exact location of the station. Among many other improvements, the app is now also available in dark mode. The app has also been optimised for tablet users.

Most of the nationwide data of the more than 400 air monitoring stations originates from the monitoring networks of the federal states. The air quality index, which ranges from "very good" to "very poor", provides information at a glance about the air quality at each station. Depending on the level of exposure, the app gives health advice for outdoor activities. The app can also be set to send alerts in case of poor air quality.
