The cornerstone ceremony for the addition to the German Environment Agency took place on Friday, 8 April 2016, in Dessau's Gas Quarter. The Plus-Energy building, designed by the Berlin architects "Anderhalten Architekten who also designed the main building, will be a very special ecological building. Its energy needs will be generated 100% by itself, using photovoltaics and geothermal heat. The building will also use environmentally friendly building materials such as recycled concrete and hemp insulation.

The cornerstone for the UBA's main office were laid nearly 14 years ago just a few metres away. That building is still a prototype of ecological building today. The new addition will also be exemplary in that it sets new standards for government buildings. A Plus-Energy building is being erected which operates completely on its own renewable energy. The entire campus will therefore consume no more energy than it did before, despite the new building which has space for some one hundred workplaces and a large conference area. Another special feature: the entire construction site is being run on environmentally friendly, certified hydroelectric power.

The building's new occupants are staff who have been working in rental offices at the Fürst Leopold Carré instead of the UBA main office. Having all UBA workers on one property will mean short lines of communication.

The lobby of the main building which is across from the addition has already been enlarged and redesigned. Work on the building's rough structure will now commence. The topping-out ceremony will be celebrated this year. The outer facades will be completed in spring 2017. After geothermal preparatory work for heating and cooling is finished, landscaping work will get started in autumn 2017. The move-in date is scheduled for late 2017. Monitoring during operation will also commence to optimize the building's technical installations and to see whether the "energy-plus building" goal is in fact being achieved and where there is a need for optimization.

Construction work was commissioned by the Federal Republic of Germany to the Federal Institute for Real Estate, the Ministry of Finance of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and the building authorities of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt at a cost of 13.5 million euros.
