StadtKlima – Municipal strategies and potentials in regard to climate change

30.03.2015

Hintergrund und Ziele

Strategies for reducing the climate change and for adapting to the climate change are of fundamental importance for securing the future of large and small communities alike. Adaptation to climate change requires implementing integrated strategies in cooperation with different stakeholders and at different local levels.

The research project "StadtKlima – Municipal strategies and potentials in regard to climate change" is a sub-project of the ExWoSt research field "Urban Strategies for the Climate Change (KlimaExWoSt)", and comprises nine model projects for dealing with the climate change. In this context, a planning-oriented city climate guideline – the so-called "Stadtklimalotse" – is being developed to support local governments.

More detailed information on the model regions and the city climate guideline can be found in the individual project descriptions (see links).

The nine model projects are:

– Bad Liebenwerda – eine Stadt zum Wohlfühlen (a town to enjoy): Facing the climate change

– The Regensburg model project

– JenKAS – Jena climate adaptation strategy

– Climate adaptation in Nuremberg: Summer in the city – sensible ways of dealing with the climate change

– klimAix – Climate-conscious commercial area development in the member towns of the CityRegion association of Aachen (StädteRegion Aachen)

– NVK regional association of Karlsruhe - Internal development versus climate comfort

– Saarbrücken – Open space planning as an approach to adaptation measures

– Town meets climate change – integrated strategies for Essen

– Syke – Acting responsibly in the face of the climate change

The objectives of the model projects are:

– to model integrated action plans, particularly for climate-conscious urban redevelopment in the sense of modernization (compact city vision),

– to develop realistic and innovative strategies for dealing with uncertainties in stakeholders' actions,

– to further develop the city climate guideline ("Stadtklimalotse") for municipal climate adaptation,

– practical examination of existing and new (legal) urban development instruments,

– efficient adaptation and investigation of the contribution of the measures towards employment and stability at a city/regional level,

– motivating partners (stakeholders) in civil society,

– to promote municipal governance and build lasting, sustainable stakeholder networks,

– development of concrete recommendations for action and stakeholder-specific public relations work.

To this end, it is important to link the common objectives for climate-related measures with other pressing tasks in urban development, for example, dealing with the demographic and structural changes.

National research assistance team:

A national research assistance team provide the nine model regions with both scientific and organizational support in implementing climate change measures. The national research assistance team will act as a service interface between the model projects and the client

The main tasks of the national research assistance team lie in

– the overall organizational and professional coordination of the model cities,

– the on-site project coordination,

– providing specialist, scientific research support,

– carrying out workshops and events,

– acting as the service interface between the model projects and the client,

– preparing results for the continuous public relations work, plus

– reporting and transfer of results.
