As urbanization continues and global temperatures rise, the worldwide demand for cooling in buildings is projected to triple by 2050, resulting in a more than twofold increase in electricity consumption. Without immediate intervention, this surge will drive emissions to an alarming 6.1 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) (Global Cooling Watch, ⁠UNEP⁠, 2023). To put this number into perspective: 6 billion tons of CO₂ is the amount of CO₂ the entire world emitted in 1950 (The World in Data). Furthermore, the use of refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) exacerbates the problem and intensifies climate-related challenges.

The Green Cooling Summit 2025 will put a spotlight on cooling and heating solutions with natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons and ammonia that outperform hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) technologies regarding impact on climate and environment. Furthermore, availability and economy of HFC-free solutions will be discussed. The objective of the Summit is to foster the deployment of energy-efficient technologies with natural refrigerants which, first, helps countries to improve their environmental performance and electrical energy supply reliability and, second, comply with the HFC phase-down according tot he Kigali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol.

In addition to mechanical cooling, attention will be drawn to passive measures such as shading and insulation to keep buidlings cool in the summer as well as the implementation of ambitious building codes. Good practice examples of district heating and cooling as well as building air conditioning exhibit real life sustainable options.

The Green Cooling Summit 2025 addresses suppliers and endusers of building air conditioning technologies as well as architects, construction engineers and researchers. Attendance is free of charge.
