Hintergrund und Ziele
In the second phase of the research programme "Urban Climate Under Change" [UC]2 , the new urban climate model PALM-4U (developed in the first phase) should become a product that meets the needs of municipalities and other practical users as well as scientific research. A transdisciplinary research approach is pursued with the direct participation of actors from municipalities, urban planning, air pollution control and other areas. In addition, new concepts and methods for integrative studies are being developed in order to cope with the challenges of climate change for cities.
PALM-4U is a building-resolving urban climate model. It enables demand-oriented and practical actions for climate change adapted development in urban planning. The new urban climate model should be complemented with a user friendly graphical interface and run on PCs with limited resources. The integration of selected application examples and user groups in the modelling process ensures the practicability of the new urban climate model.

Schritte im Prozess zur Anpassung an den Klimawandel
Schritt 1: Klimawandel verstehen und beschreiben
With long-term observations, intensive measurement campaigns and physical modeling, three-dimensional, atmospheric data on weather and climate, aerosols and air pollutants in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart are obtained.
Schritt 2a: Risiken erkennen und bewerten (Klimafolgen/-wirkungen)
The urban climate model PALM-4U makes it possible to simulate atmospheric processes in cities down to the level of buildings. In this way, the effects of extreme weather events in cities can be simulated and the resulting risks identified.
Schritt 3: Maßnahmen entwickeln und vergleichen
With the PALM-4U, the effects of urban development measures on e. g. air pollutants and exposure to heat stress can be simulated. In this way, the effectiveness of measures for adaptation to climate change can be checked on the basis of current data.
