Carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas, which is a result of incomplete fuel combustion. An important source of carbon monoxide in ambient air is the transport sector.
Carbon monoxide affects the oxygen intake of humans and animals. Even low quantities of this harmful substance have adverse effects on the central nervous system. Furthermore, carbon monoxide is involved in the formation of ground-level ozone.
Limit value
On 1 January 2005 the limit value for carbon monoxide was put into force to protect human health and the environment. Accordingly, the maximum daily 8-hour mean value must not exceed 10 mg/m3.
