The impact of digitisation and big data analysis on the sustainable development of tourism and its environmental impact

The research report provides an overview of digitisation trends and developments in tourism with regard to resource consumption and environmental impacts. As a result, eleven relevant categories of digitisation are identified and systematised. The categories can allocated within three spheres. These are: a) data connectivity, i.e. the collection, linking and processing of data; b) the data infrastructure enables data connectivity and the output of processed data in the form of digital service applications; and c) the data ecosystem is the business basis for such applications. Digitisation as such is not evaluated a priori either positively or negatively as a result of the assessment. Overall, significantly more positive (34) than negative (15) impact paths were identified.
