Global warming: Pioneers of change wanted!

Federal Ministry for Environment and Federal Environment Agency launch contest

Pro-active parties who are adapting now to climate change are sought in a new contest launched by the Federal Ministry for Environment (BMU) and the Competence Center on Global Warming and Adaptation at the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). Exemplary local and regional initiatives in climate change adaptation are wanted up to the 2 April 2011 deadline. There are many good beginnings in the areas of flood protection, environmentally friendly air conditioning of buildings, or ”green roofs”, and UBA and BMU aim to find the best ones. The contest especially targets cities and municipalities, businesses and associations, as well as other committed stakeholders. The contest launch coincides with the Center’s “KomPass-Tatenbank für Maßnahmen zur Anpassung an den Klimawandel" on 1 December 2010, a database offering all interested parties a forum to register their own adaptation projects or be inspired by the ideas of others.

Why such a contest? The flooding incidents and extreme summer heat this year once again provided evidence that climate change has also made its mark on Germany. It is therefore important not only to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also to counteract the now inevitable damage to society and the environment that climate change will cause. The purpose of the contest and the database (KomPass-Tatenbank) is to shed light on opportunities to adapt to the change and to spread information on good ideas.

All climate change adaptation measures registered at www.tatenbank.anpassung.net by 2 April 2011 are eligible to enter the contest. A jury will select three exemplary projects from all entries. The winners will be announced to the public and the media at a ceremony to be held in Autumn 2011. The three winners and a selection of best practice examples will also be recorded in a Federal Environment Agency brochure entitled Gute Praxis in der Anpassung.
