Abstract

Main challenges for mining in Mongolia are inconsistent rehabilitation of the mining facilities in the past and the poor consideration of the environmental protection aspects. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia wants to balance the economic boom in the mining sector and the necessary environmental protection. The overall goal of the project was to ensure the environmentally sound rehabilitation of mining areas and minimize soil and water pollution. German experts carried out an audit of existing mining and environmental regulations for coal mining in Mongolia.
