Good practice in adapting to climate change in Germany

05.02.2015

Background and Goals

Existing climate models show that Germany will be increasingly affected by the consequences of the climate change and that this will, for example, lead to more frequent extreme weather conditions. These predictions are even more likely to become reality given the slow progress on international agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Measures for adapting to climate change and reducing our vulnerability to its effects are therefore essential. The climate change often presents stakeholders in the different affected sectors with completely new challenges. Exchanging information on adaptation practices already in place can help these stakeholders to respond to the challenges ahead. A focussed communication of good practice can also help lower the risk of mistakes in the long term.

The objectives are:

  • To create a knowledge base of good practice in adapting to climate change;
  • To extend the KomPass online information services;
  • To communicate good practice for climate change adaptation;
  • To accompany the "German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change" (DAS)

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

The project identifies examples of good practice in adapting to climate change on the basis of an analysis of current research. The aim is to provide municipalities, businesses and citizens with ideas for planning and suitably implementing adaptation measures.

One result of the project is the supplemented "KomPass-Tatenbank": they documented projects and measures to adapt to climate change. It provides a forum for all interested parties to independently write and present their own adaptation projects. You can also get ideas from the other measures here. The focus is on local and regional measures that have been carried out in Germany or are still in the implementation.

Step 4: Plan and implement measures

Measures and/or strategies

The project identifies examples of good practice in adapting to climate change on the basis of an analysis of current research. The aim is to provide municipalities, businesses and citizens with ideas for planning and suitably implementing adaptation measures. Examples of good practice identified in the course of the project are entered into an online database of measures called the "Tatenbank".

A communication strategy will be developed to increase awareness about this tool, and implemented together with the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The primary target groups of the "Tatenbank" are small and medium-sized businesses, local and regional authorities and associations.
