The Paris Agreement of 2015 set forth strategies for planning and executing mitigation of global warming across all sectors. As it still generates growth, air transport plays an important part in achieving those goals. In particular, international aviation will have to use more alternative, post-fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to increasing energy efficiency and offsetting growth-related CO2 emissions.

In this regard, the German Environment Agency (UBA) is currently developing a concept for a greener air transport. One of its pillars is seen in the industrial-scale production of so-called power-to-liquid fuels (PtL) from renewable electricity and CO2 to replace conventional (fossil) kerosine. To ensure the necessary time-critical and comprehensive implementation of these innovative fuels, extensive political backing is needed. Within Europe, it will be especially necessary to gain the support of parliamentarians who are willing to pave the way for this technology and can help present technical and economic aspects to a broad audience.

Thus, UBA together with the German Aviation Association would like invite you to a workshop taking place on 8 October 2019 to address this topic in the strategic venue of Brussels and discuss options. The primary goal is to raise awareness regarding the problem and to familiarise members of the European Parliament and the Commission with the properties of power-to-liquid as an air transport fuel option.
