Human Biomonitoring (HBM) enables the measurement of environmental chemicals polluting the human population.

To achieve this, various substances, their metabolites or markers for health effects are determined in different types of human samples. Data on the sources of environmental chemicals as well as epidemiological studies can be linked to this information.

The European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU), coordinated by UBA, aims to harmonise different approaches and databases regarding HBM across Europe in order to improve the basis for regulatory policy making.

Once a year, meetings of several important project bodies are held. Back-to-back with the meeting of the highest decision-making body, the Austrian organisations involved in the HBM4EU initiative (Austrian Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism and the Environment Agency Austria) together with the European Commission organise a HBM conference. This conference is held under the auspices of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In terms of content, the conference will highlight the advantages of human biomonitoring for political decision-makers, as well as present first results of the HBM4EU programme and point out perspectives and challenges.

High-ranking political and scientific stakeholders are invited.
