From 16 to 22 September 2016, Europe’s local authorities will be showing their citizens how sustainable mobility works in practice. 2,000 cities and municipalities from all over Europe are participating, including the German cities Frankfurt/Main, Erfurt and Würzburg.
European Mobility Week (EMW) is a chance for municipalities throughout Europe to raise citizen awareness of sustainable mobility and to establish measures which make local transport more sustainable for the climate and environment. Mobility-related campaigns are taking place in some 2,000 cities and municipalities across Europe. The German Environment Agency (UBA) took over coordination of the EMW in Germany this year.
UBA’s President Maria Krautzberger comments: “Our transport systems must undergo change to ensure clean air and climate protection. European Mobility Week is a good opportunity for people and local authorities to put innovative transport solutions to the test.“
More than 20 cities and districts in Germany are participating in the EMW this year, more than doubled compared to last year. The campaigns are very diverse, featuring a bicycle-GPS rally in Würzburg, cargo bikes which can be tested in Dresden, mobility celebrations in Frankfurt/Main and Norderstedt, and anyone with a broken bicycle in Chemnitz can get to work mending it at a do-it-yourself shop. The EMW kick-off event is taking place at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt/Main on 16 September 2016. This is the city of Frankfurt’s tenth year of participation in the EMW. Mr Rudolf Scharping, President of the German Cycling Federation, will be launching the event. The event is open to all EMW participants and interested members of the public.
