The UN General Assembly has declared 2015 as the International Year of Soils (IYS). Objectives of IYS are to raise the awareness on the importance of soils as the basis for food systems, fuel and fibre production as well as for other essential ecosystem functions  as e.g. adaptation to climate change. This is of essential importance for present and future generations.

On this occasion the IESP workshop “Soil – An Essential Resource” aims at providing a platform to discuss the challenges, to implement strategies for the sustainable management and protection of soil resources. Major topics to be addressed are erosion, land take, climate change and soil management challenges. These soil threats are recognized and discussed together with new approaches for managing healthy soils, the relevance of infrastructures for soil research, and global and regional soil partnerships concepts.
