ECCE - A Preliminary Assessment of the Impacts in Spain due to the Effects of Climate Change

26.08.2021

Background and Goals

The project is a preliminary and comprehensive assessment of the possible climate effects for the various ecosystems and socio-economic sectors in Spain.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

Mostly, IPCC scenarios were used. In some cases, the projections were also based on regional climate models such as PROMES.

Parameter (climate signals)
  • Higher average temperatures
Time horizon
  • long term = to 2100 and beyond

Step 2a: Identify and assess risks - climate effects and impact

Approach and results

The climate change impacts on different ecosystems and their subsystems are explored, as are the consequences for different sectors of the economy and the risk of climate-related natural disasters such as floods, forest fires and landslides.

Step 2b: Identify and assess risks - Vulnerability, risks and chances

Approach and results

Vulnerability was analysed to different levels of detail for different areas.

Urgency and priorization of adaptation needs

An urgent need for action was identified in all areas. Despite great uncertainties remaining about the details of the climate change impacts, these must not be used as an excuse not to address adaptation and mitigation measures that will help avoid the worst consequences and biggest risks.

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Recommendations for adaptation measures will be made for all areas for which the climate change impacts are considered.

Time horizon
  • 2071–2100 (far future)
