In the public sector, myriad types of furniture come into play: office chairs, desks, filing cabinets, shelving, reception counters, cloak rooms, beds and slatted frames.

Inasmuch as furniture manufacturing always involves resource use, it should be determined during the needs analysis phase whether used furniture can be used instead of purchasing new furniture. Purchasing used furniture extends product lifetimes and reduces environmental pollution, which furniture can engender throughout its lifetime, along with health hazards.

Hence any new furniture that is purchased should ideally be made of wood from sustainable forestry and low-emission wood-based materials. Such furniture should also be durable, and highly suitable for its intended purpose.
