It is quite common that electrical equipment becomes unexpectedly defective, and repair is either impossible or not worth the investment.

One wonders: is it a coincidence or perhaps planned by the manufacturer? The UBA wants to get to the bottom of the matter and has commissioned the first systematic study on the topic. The project started in autumn 2013 and is carried out by the Öko-Institut e.V. in cooperation with the University of Bonn. A status report will be published in January 2015.
