Background

For the first time, the European Commission organized the international New European Bauhaus Festival on 9-12 June 2022. On 9th of June 2022. The German Environment Agency in cooperation with the European Commission contributed to the NEB Festival a high-ranking digital panel discussion and invited to join the online event and discuss with Dirk Messner, President of the German Environment Agency (UBA), and Bernd Biervert, Head of Unit "Ecological and Social Transition" at the DG Research of the European Commission.

The event highlighted challenges and knowledge needs for climate neutral building and urban transformation. The contributions addressed the sustainability goals and NEB principles in terms of climate and resource protection, Zero Pollution Ambition, better governance, cultural heritage and justice aspects. The speakers discussed how research, politics, business and society can form strategic alliances for integrated solutions fostering a sustainable, inclusive and aesthetic transformation to promote its rapid implementation.

Questions that motivated the discussion included:

  • What knowledge and research do cities and communities, citizens and business need regarding climate and resource-efficient construction and city development?
  • Who are pioneers and how can strategic alliances be organized with them?
  • How can the transfer between the NEB initiatives and science in the field of sustainability be promoted and vice versa?
  • How can we push a timely implementation of sustainability solutions and facilitate knowledge uptake in European collaboration?

With its NEB initiative, the European Commission is supporting the formation of new strategic alliances and a creative exchange between European cities and regions in order to promote building and renovation into climate-neutral, just and aesthetic places. This transformation of the built environment requires the engagement and commitment of actors and initiatives from culture, civil society, science and politics in order to combine sustainability goals with a new building culture and innovative design through pioneering practical examples.
