International online conference ‘Green Cooling Summit 2023‘

The ‘Green Cooling Summit‘ will be helt from 10th to 11th October this year, again online, focussing on green cooling along the cold chain. It is organised by the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit“ GIZ and the German Environment Agency (UBA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment as well as the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

In order to secure the global food supply, the continuous cooling of food products from farm to fork is needed in addition to sufficient production. This is partly not the case especially in developing countries since 475 million tonnes of food, 13 % of the global production, is lost due to gaps in the cold chain. The avoidance of food losses would not only effectively fight hunger in the world, but also contribute to climate protection: 3.3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions could be cut by preventing food waste.

Despite the global phase-down of climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) according to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, HFC-free technologies are hardly available in transport refrigeration. This is why emissions due to energy consumption and refrigerant leakages cause 1 % of global greenhouse gas emissions in total. Hence, more green cooling is needed here: efficient cooling technologies with natural refrigerants, ideally driven by renewable energy. In the two-day event, it is to be demonstrated and discussed what kind of sustainable technologies exist and how they can be promoted.

The ‘Green Cooling Summit 2023‘ addresses manufacturers and endusers of cooling technologies along the cold chain as well as planners and researchers. Attending the event is free of charge.
