147 submissions to the contest's four categories "Product", "Service", "Concept", and "Young Talent" were on display and evaluated yesterday at feldfünf, in the open space of the Metropolenhaus in Berlin. 28 projects were nominated by the environmental and design experts of the jury for this year's design award. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze will announce and award the prize to winners at the Federal Ministry for the Environment on 30 November 2020.

The Federal Ministry of Environment and the German Environment Agency, in cooperation with International Design Center Berlin (IDZ), have awarded the prize every year since 2012. The award honours products, services and concepts which demonstrate extraordinary character in their design.

Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Environment ( BMU ) and member of the jury, said, "Ecodesign – if not now, when? Climate action and resource efficiency call for modern solutions. Products and concepts nominated for the Ecodesign Award are characterised by progressive and bold design while at the same time taking into account environmental and climate protection.

Jury panelist Prof. Anna Berkenbusch said, "At present we are dealing on many levels with alternatives for coexistence: How do we manage the balancing act between healthy living in pandemic times and climate-friendly everyday life? Designers are familiar with the tightrope walk between perfect solution and compromise. We need a plan B for many well-known behaviour patterns. The many interesting submissions to the Ecodesign Award show that there is another way."

This year, around 350 entries from companies, design, engineering and architectural offices, as well as research institutions and universities competed for the highest national award for ecodesign in Germany. The evaluation procedure is a two-stage process. A total of 147 submissions passed the pre-selection by experts from the German Environment Agency and the Advisory Council and were admitted to the jury meeting.

From 23 to 27 September 2020, the nominees and all works admitted to the jury meeting will be on display in the special public exhibition at feldfünf, in the project rooms of the Berlin Metropolenhaus. A touring exhibition with all prize winners and nominees will be shown at trade fairs and museums in 2021.
