”Girls’ Day - future prospects for girls” 2008

Federal Environment Agency in Dessau-Roßlau is in on it once again

On 24 April, now also known as Girls’ Day, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) is extending an invitation to girls in particular to get information on interesting careers in the environmental field.  Agency staff present the office building in Dessau-Roßlau in terms of its construction and engineering, do experiments with them on the effects of noise and noise abatement, talk about how environmental law is enforced, and offer some insight into the work done by IT engineers.  The youthful visitors have a chance to see how successful women can be as engineers, scientists or in the legal field.  There is also something for boys: two teams can play ”Mannopoli”, an entertaining and educational guessing game about jobs, career and life planning, which is about more than just gaining knowledge

.

For one whole day 40 girls and 12 boys aged 14 and older can see first hand the work done at UBA. The UBA’s work covers topics as diverse as climate and resource protection, renewable energies, environment and health, water pollution, or environmental chemicals. The visiting boys and girls will hear about how to get the training and education necessary to assume qualified careers in environmental protection.

In this nationwide scheme, ”Girls’ Day - future prospects for girls” schoolgirls gain insight into jobs only rarely considered by girls when choosing a career. Private chats with the staff of companies, public offices and research institutions will broaden their horizons and direct their interest to careers in technology and the natural sciences. Moreover, businesses and organisations will have a chance to identify who their future staff might be.

The nationwide coordination of Girls’ Day is supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, the Elderly, Women and Youth.  The scheme is also supported by Initiative D21 e.V., a coalition of more than 300 businesses and organisations in the IT sector, the Federation of German Trade Unions, Federal Employment Services,  and the Confederation of German Employers' Associations.
