Designers, students and companies of any size and in any sector from anywhere in Europe have until 17 April 2023 to make an entry for the German Ecodesign Award. Wanted: innovative ideas and projects that are progressive and demonstrate exceptional design. This can include market-ready goods and services, conceptual work, also by students. Creativity knows no bounds here!

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (BMUV) said: “Good design and environmentally friendly goods and service are key drivers of innovation to solve the crises of our environment. The winners of the German Ecodesign Award have proven this time and time again. Designers familiar with life cycle analysis and innovative, environmentally friendly materials are helping us to save resources, do less damage to the environment and to consume more sustainably. I am therefore looking forward to many new innovative products, concepts and contributions from young talents competing for the German Ecodesign Award.”

Dr Dirk Messner, President of the German Environment Agency (UBA) said: “To achieve a great transformation we need processes and systems that are designed to meet the requirements of the future as well as being durable and recyclable. The German Ecodesign Award is on the lookout for examples that do just that.”

Entries go through a number of processes involving a committee of design and environment experts and a high-ranking jury who carry out evaluations. Awards are granted to projects that demonstrate excellence in terms of environmental and design quality as well as making an innovative contribution to transformation. Winners will be announced and honoured at an awards ceremony to be held at the Federal Environment Ministry on 4 December 2023.

In addition to a set of award criteria, the Ecodesignkit of the German Environment Agency, updated and revised in 2022, offers support during the planning and design phase of the award. The Ecodesignkit is a portal, handbook and toolkit all in one. It offers guidance and helps users to ask the right questions in the design process.

The Federal Ministry for Environment (BMUV) and the German Environment Agency (UBA) have awarded the German Ecodesign Award every year since 2012 in cooperation with the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ). This highest national prize for ecodesign is awarded in the categories "Product", "Service", "Concept" and "Young Talent/Newcomer". Entries representing innovation in design as well as technical and social innovation are welcome.
