Effective immediately, businesses of all sizes from all sectors, designers and students can submit their projects to apply for the award. The award targets creative design ideas and projects which also meet the highest ecological demands. The Federal Ministry for the Environment and the German Environment Agency (UBA), together with the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ) are announcing the award across Europe. The application deadline is 18 April 2022.

Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said: “The key to sustainable consumption is the products themselves. Up to 80 percent of a product’s environmental impact is determined at the design stage. If electrical equipment is easy to dismantle and repair, it can be used longer and not need to be replaced as quickly. This saves resources and greenhouse gas emissions and lightens the load on the consumer’s purse. The German Ecodesign Award combines excellent design with environmental and consumer protection.”

UBA President Dirk Messner said: “Climate action will only work with responsible resource management. Ecodesign plays a key role in this regard because the design process has a significant influence on the climate and environmental impact of products and services. Once again we are promoting outstanding pioneers of ecodesign with this year’s award.”

Submissions are evaluated in a multi-stage process by a panel of design and environmental experts as well as a high-profile jury. The award is given to projects that demonstrate outstanding environmental and design quality as well as an innovative approach. The award winners will be honoured and publicly announced at the award ceremony at the Federal Ministry for the Environment on 5 December 2022.

The Federal Ecodesign Award of the Federal Ministry for Environment (BMUV) and the German Environment Agency (UBA), in collaboration with the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ), has conferred the Ecodesign Award since 2012. The highest state award for ecological design is given in the four categories Product, Service, Concept and Young Talent. The IDZ is responsible for development and organization of the contest.
