Packaging which is product at the same time? An app that helps users save resources? A new concept for environmentally friendly mobility in rural areas? Businesses, students and unorthodox thinkers are once again called upon to enter the contest with their innovative services, concepts and products by 6 April 2020.

The Federal Ecodesign Award accepts entries in the four categories "Concept", "Service", "Product" and "Young Talent". The decisive criteria is ecological and aesthetic design. From the idea through to production and disposal – the focus is on the entire life cycle of every product and thereby on how design solutions can influence our consumption behaviour in such a way to relieve environmental pressure. How can products, product parts and their materials be kept in the substance cycle as long as possible? How can they mitigate harmful environmental impact?

The contest has been announced every year since 2012 by the Federal Ministry for Environment (BMU ) and the German Environment Agency (UBA ) in collaboration with the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ). It is the highest federal government award honouring ecodesign. The quality of the entries is evaluated in a multi-stage procedure by experts from the German Environment Agency, the Advisory Council and a high-ranking jury.

Award winners will be celebrated at a festive event held at the Federal Ministry for Environment in November 2020. Professional image trailers will be produced for award promotion purposes and made available to the award winners. A public touring exhibition of all the nominated and winning entries will be staged in 2020. Award winners receive a money prize of 1000 euros each.
