MARS ist das Informationsnetzwerk für Störfälle in der
EU. Der zentralen Datenbank sind die lokalen Datenbanken in den einzelnen Mitgliedsstaaten angeschlossen. Die zentrale Datenbank wird vom Major Accident Hazards Bureau (MAHB beim Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra betreut.
The Major Accident Reporting System (MARS) is a distributed information network, consisting of 15 local databases on a MS-Windows platform in each Member State of
the European Union and a central UNIX-based analysis system at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Ispra (MAHB) that allows complex text retrieval and pattern analysis.
MARS - Database Search
In accordance with the call of the "Seveso II Directive" for a more open access to information on major accident hazards for all interested parties (governmental authorities, public, industry, research
organisations, etc.), the following procedure to exchange MARS data between MAHB and the Competent Authorities of the Member States, and and other interested parties, has been introduced:
1.remove all
confidentiality from MARS data when distributing MARS data from MAHB to the Competent Authorities,
2.keep certain data fields confidential when publishing MARS information from MAHB to the public, industry and
research organisations. These fields correspond essentially to information contained in the Report Profile and Full Report (name of plant, personal data, industrial secrets, etc.).
Therefore, on the www, MARS
data can only be viewed with regard to the information included in the Short Reports.

This page provides summaries and reviews of the US Department of Energy's Occurrence Reporting and Processing System (ORPS). Chemical
"occurrences" are defined as both events and conditions reported at DOE facilities. DOE has been tracking, trending, analyzing, and compiling chemical safety concerns at its facilities since August 1992.
These concerns have been summarized in monthly reports and analyzed in quarterly and annual reviews. Monthly reports present a quickly available summary of chemical safety occurrences (events and conditions) at DOE
facilities including short descriptions of the more significant concerns. Quarterly reviews contain analysis of occurrences, causes, corrective actions, and lessons learned as well as some statistical analysis of
chemical safety performance across the DOE complex as determined from ORPS monitoring.

The Chemical Incident Reports Center (CIRC) is an information service
provided by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB). Users of this service should note that the contents of the CIRC are not intended to be a comprehensive listing of all incidents that have
occurred; many incidents go unreported or are not entered into the database. Also, although the CSB never knowingly posts inaccurate information, the CSB is unable to independently verify all information that it
receives from its various sources, much of which is based on initial reports. CIRC users should also note that the CSB receives more comprehensive reports about incidents that occur in the U.S.; comparisons made
between U.S. incidents and those in other nations should take this fact into consideration.

The Emergency Response Notification System (ERNS) is a database used to store information on notifications of oil discharges and hazardous substances releases. The ERNS program is a cooperative data sharing
effort among the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Headquarters, the Department of Transportation Research and Special Programs Administration's (RSPA) ERNS provides the most comprehensive data compiled on
notifications of oil discharges and hazardous substance releases in the United States. Since its inception in 1986, more than 275,000 release notifications have been entered into ERNS. Learn more about ERNS by

The Major Hazard Incidents Data Service (MHIDAS) is a database maintained by AEA Technology plc, on behalf of the UK Health and Safety Executive, which currently holds details of over seven thousands incidents which
have occurred during the transport, processing or storage of hazardous materials which resulted in or it is considered had the potential to cause off-site impact. This definition includes incidents which incurred
casualties, required evacuation of either on-site or off-site personnel or caused damage to property or the natural environment, together with incidents which could, but for mitigating circumstances, have led to the
above occurring. Some particular types of incidents, such as those involving radioactive materials for example, are specifically excluded from the database.
All the information on the MHIDAS database is taken
from public domain information sources and the database aims to collect information on incidents that have occurred world-wide, although the majority of the seven thousand incidents currently on the database
occurred either in the UK or USA which reflects the greater availability of published incident information from these countries. The database is updated every quarter, but incidents are not generally entered onto
the database until a year after they have occurred so that as much information as possible can be collected for each incident from a number of different types of journals.
Access to the MHIDAS database can be
made in a number of ways: a personalised service is provided on a fee basis through AEA Technology, and the database is also available on CD-ROM or as on-line database which is part of the European Space Agency
Information Retrieval Service.

FACTS, a database containing 20,000
descriptions of serious accidents involving hazardous materials that caused, or could have caused, severe damage and danger. The information stored in FACTS is obtained from professional sources, such as accident
reports made by companies, government agencies or from publications in technical periodicals and other literature. Of course, information from a number of sources is confidential. TNO treats this information with
strict anonymity. In 2000 TNO added a new software tool to the FACTS family. It is called FRIENDS. This minidatabase contains a one-line summary of every accident that is stored in FACTS. It includes not only the
injuries and fatalities but also the hazardous chemicals involved.
Apart from the condensed accident information, FRIENDS contains a powerful database explorer that optimises the selection process for accident

Environmental safety is everyone's responsibility. In recent years, one aspect of this broad field has come into sharp focus: the safe handling of chemicals. Following an incident in 1984 in Bhopal, India,
which killed more than 2,000 people, initiatives have sprung up in the public and private sectors to determine how we maintain the quality of life and still manage chemicals safely. EPA has taken a leading role in
