Drinking water Commission

Last changed: 5/04/11

The German Drinking water Commission (Trinkwasserkommission - TWK) is a national expert body of the German Federal Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit - BMG) within the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt - UBA).  The Commission advises both public offices on issues of drinking water hygiene.

The BMG, the Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit - BMU), and supreme environmental authorities in the Laender jointly appoint Commission members for a three-year session.

Membership in the TWK is honorary.  Commission members come from university institutes, federal state public offices, public health offices, and waterworks.  In addition to appointed members and frequent visitors, meetings are also attended by delegates from BMG, BMU, and the Federal Ministry of Defence (Bundesministerium der Verteidigung - BMVg), the Federal Railway Authority, and UBA. If necessary, the Commission invites additional experts.

The Drinking water Commission discusses current issues and problems in drinking water hygiene and makes recommendations that are especially bound to preventative health care.  The Drinking water Commission’s recommendations mainly serve as a common platform for action by public health offices and water suppliers—in addition to the regulations of the Drinking water Ordinance.
