Since 15/11/94, environmental protection has been embodied in Art. 20a of the German constitution as an objective of the state. This has given environmental protection and its associated aims constitutional status. The organs of state - in particular the legislature - are now legally bound, although not liable as individuals, to protect the environment for future generations. In weighing up environmental protection against other social interests, the environment must be given greater consideration.
