Samples of such things as bird eggs or fish livers collected in environmental specimen banks help to monitor environmental pollution by problematic chemicals on a long-term basis. They are therefore a key factor in assessing the success of the EU REACH chemicals policy. Experts discussed just how the 16 European environmental specimen banks can help provide such as overview at a June 2010 conference held in Berlin. The conference report has now been published.
The global loss of biological diversity cannot be stopped by isolated activities of individual groups or countries. What is needed instead is common efforts from all sides. The basis for this is the international Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which was adopted on 22 May 1992. A UBA thematic page summarises what contribution environmental protection makes to the protection of biodiversity.
The report ”Data on the Environment” is published every four years. It takes stock of the development of the state of the environment in Germany, highlights environmental improvements and shows where action is still needed.
